Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)

What is SFBT?

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is an approach to counseling designed to empower individuals on their journey toward healing and growth. Developed in the 1980s by Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg, SFBT is both short-term and goal-oriented. It invites clients to focus on finding solutions to their challenges rather than getting caught up in the reasons behind those challenges. The therapy encourages a shift toward clients’ aspirations and the tangible steps they can take to achieve them. In this supportive environment, clients are encouraged to explore their strengths, resources, and past successes, using these as a solid foundation for creating positive change. SFBT emphasizes understanding how individuals have overcome similar obstacles in the past or reflecting on moments when their difficulties felt less overwhelming. By doing so, clients can feel more hopeful and motivated as they move toward their desired outcomes, often within a surprisingly short period, and sometimes in a single session!
The collaborative nature of SFBT ensures that the therapist and client work hand in hand to define clear goals and actionable steps. This partnership fosters a sense of empowerment, making clients feel capable of bringing about lasting change in their lives. A unique and uplifting aspect of SFBT is its focus on envisioning a hopeful and fulfilling future. SFBT incorporates practical techniques, such as the “miracle question,” which helps clients imagine a life free from their struggles, and scaling questions that assess their progress and motivation. It is widely appreciated for its ability to address various issues, including anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, and life transitions. Most importantly, SFBT is valued for its efficiency and its focus on fostering positive, attainable outcomes that aligns directly with clients’ aspirations and hopes.
